Part of a series of special commissions for Channel 4’s Black History Month, Hair Power: Me And My Afro, produced by Pulse Films and co-funded by DOVE, asks some of the most important questions facing the Black British population – and how it is that hair became the most misunderstood, celebrated and fetishized aspect of the black experience.

Academic and broadcaster Emma Dabiri (author of the memoir Don’t Touch My Hair) takes the conversation, talking to men and women whose identities have been shaped by their hair. These frank and intimate conversations will lay bare a multi-faceted and complex experience.

From looking at the science behind what makes black hair different and the beauty regimens that are a rite of passage and source of empowerment for many to feelings of otherness and rejection, Hair Power: Me And My Afro cracks open a subject that for too long has been off-limits.
